SC affirms death sentence on Duminda Silva Top News

The Supreme Court today affirmed the death sentence imposed by the High Court on ex-MP Duminda Silva and two others who were convicted of killing former presidential adviser Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra when the SC took up for hearing the appeal filed by the accused challenging the HC order. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court acquitted the first accused from all charges at this hearing. CID vows to take action against CDS

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (10), vowed before Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that they would take action against incumbent Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Ravindra Wijeguneratne. A special operation was launched by the Jaffna Police yesterday to arrest suspects involved with the Aava gang and in respect of other gang activities, the Jaffna Senior DIG Roshan Fernando told the Daily News. He said the special search operation has been launched in the Kopai, Chunnakam and Manipai areas especially targeting the Inuvil and Kokkuvil areas where most of the gang violence has been reported. During the cordon and search operation yesterday the police officers had searched around 21 homes, while three suspects who had been involved with the Aava gang had been arrested.

As regard to the UNHRC resolution 30/1 co-sponsored by the US and Sri Lanka and adopted in early October 2015, Foreign Affairs Minister Tilak Marapana said Sri Lanka has made considerable progress on complying with the requirements expected of Sri Lanka. Further more, the resolution overlapped undertakings in the EU for Sri Lanka to obtain GSP+ facilities and the lifting of the export of fish ban, Minister Marapana told Daily Mirror yesterday.
