Opposition Leader meets Prime Minister to discuss economic recovery Top News

The Leader of the Opposition Mahinda Rajapaksa has met with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for discussion on economic recovery and relief for the people affected by the Easter Sunday attacks. Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, Non-Cabinet Minister Dr. Harsha de Silva and Treasury Secretary Dr. RHS Samaratunga, also participated in the discussion while opposition Parliamentarians Dinesh Gunawardena, Susil Premajayantha, Bandula Gunawardena, Udaya Gammanpila, and Gamini Lokuge accompanied the Opposition Leader.


No proof Easter Sunday Sri Lankan bomber visited India

While Indian security agencies have not found evidence of Sri Lankan bomber Zahran Hashim or his aides having visited India before the April 21 Easter Sunday attacks, it is learnt that Sri Lankan investigators are working on leads pointing to Hashim’s travel to the Maldives in the recent past, the Times of India reported.


Police chief blames president for failing to prevent SL attacks

Sri Lanka's suspended police chief has petitioned the Supreme Court, accusing President Maithripala Sirisena of failing to prevent the Easter bombings that killed 258 people, the AFP reported today. In a 20-page complaint, Inspector-General Pujith Jayasundara disclosed serious communication gaps between intelligence agencies and security arms of the government, all which fall under Sirisena.


Alleged accomplice of Zahran arrested

An engineer who built mosques for Zahran Hashmi had been arrested from the Kaduwana area in Dehiwala. Police stated that the suspect was arrested following investigations based on a tip-off. The suspect Zahir Nasurdeen was arrested when he arrived in Dehiwala from Horowpathana. According to the police, the suspect is to be detained for 72 hours.


Akkaraipattu man impersonating as SLA major, arrested in Moratuwa

A suspect who had been impersonating a major of the Sri Lankan Army Intelligence, has been arrested by the STF at Soysapura in Moratuwa yesterday. The suspect, Mohammad Nissar Imran, alias John Walk, had allegedly impersonated a major from the Army Intelligence. The STF recovered a mobile phone, two cameras, a WIFI drone, two laptops, a sword and three army t-shirts from the suspect.

The Elections Commission was ready to hold any election first, be it Presidential or Provincial Council, Chairman of Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said. Commenting on the President’s comment that the Presidential Election was likely to be held on December 07, the Chairman said after participating in a ceremony in Egodauyana area, Moratuwa, that the Presidential polls should be held between November 09 and December 09


Sri Lanka President not to allow any foreign forces to come to the country

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena says that he will not invite any foreign military to come into the country and he will not allow that at any occasion as long as he holds office. The President made this remark participating in a program held in Polonnaruwa on Saturday (June 01).The President recalling a newspaper report which said that the chief prelates were opposed to the idea of allowing foreign military forces to enter the country and requested not to invite foreign military, the President said that the government had not reached any agreement with any country to permit any foreign military to enter the country.


Gnanasara Thera meets Rathana Thera

General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena - Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera today (02) visited MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera, who is currently engaged in a fast-unto death protest in front of the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. Ven. Rathana Thera commenced the fast-unto death on May 31 demanding the removal of Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, Eastern Governor M.L.A.M. Hizbullah and Western Province Governor Azath Salley from their posts. Meanwhile, social media posts citing that sin of Rathana Thera fasting as such will befall on the president, have been making rounds on the internet.


Explosion in Jaffna, one army personnel dead, two injured

One army soldier died and two more were injured in an explosion which occurred in the Vasavilan area in Palaly this evening, Jaffna acting Military spokesman Major General Roshan Seneviratne said The injured were admitted to the Jaffna hospital. The Spokesman stated that further investigations are being carried out regarding the incident.


Sandhya Ekneligoda appeals to re-enforce sentence against Gnanasara Thera

Sandya Eknaligoda, wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda has filed a petition in the Supreme Court requesting the court to re-enforce a six month sentence issued by the Homagama Magistrate's Court against the controversial monk venerable Galagodaaththe Gnanasara thera.


China says security situation in Sri Lanka not back to normal

China says the security situation in Sri Lanka has not returned to normal. The Chinese state media institution, Xinhua, reported that the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka has further amended its travel advisory for Sri Lanka to the primary level of “take safety precautions.” The embassy has said that the Sri Lankan Government has launched a large scale crackdown on the extremist forces in the aftermath of the Easter explosions.


TNA Parliamentarian begins hunger strike in Batticaloa

Police recover laptop used by NTJ leader

The Police have recovered a laptop used by Saharan Hashim, also identified by some as Zahran Hashim, the suspected mastermind behind the Easter Sunday attacks. The Police said that the laptop was recovered in the Palamunai Lagoon in Akkaraipattu in the East. The leader of the National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) Saharan Hashim, was killed in the April 21st suicide attack. Hashim was one of the suicide bombers involved in the Easter Sunday attacks.


US Assistant Secretary Cooper to visit Sri Lanka

US Assistant Secretary of State for Political and Military Affairs, R. Clarke Cooper would travel to Sri Lanka in early June, the Office of the Spokesperson of the State Department said. A statement of the spokesperson’s office said Mr. Cooper was scheduled to visit Singapore, India and Sri Lanka from May 29-June 7.


Number of complaints soars to 377

The number of complaints received by the Kurunegala and Dambulla hospitals against Dr. Siyabdeen Mohamed Safi, who is alleged to have engaged in sterilisation surgeries, has reached 377 as at yesterday, the spokespersons of both hospitals revealed. While the Kurunegala Hospital has received 99 complaints yesterday, the Dambulla Hospital has received 42.


CID scrutinising over 1,800 telephone numbers

More than 1,800 telephone numbers used by the Easter Sunday suicide bombers and others are being closely scrutinised by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said. SP Gunasekara said several telephone numbers among the 1,800 numbers belonged to those who had connections with suicide bombers.

AG to file case against Karunanayake

The Attorney General’s (AG) Department is to file a case against Minister Ravi Karunanayake for providing false information to the Presidential Commission of Inquiry which was investigating the Central Bank treasury bond scam. The Attorney General’s Department informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court that statements will be recorded from Minister Karunanayake and his daughter in due course. The case was postponed to July 29.

Aussie returns 20 SL asylum seekers after boat intercepted

Twenty Sri Lankan asylum seekers have been flown back to their home country after their boat was intercepted en route to Australia, Australian media reported. The Department of Home Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has confirmed authorities intercepted the boat last week and the asylum seekers had been returned to Sri Lanka.


Several travel advisories on Sri Lanka softened
